Seventeen-year-old Ever is the sole survivor of a car crash that killed her entire family. Living with her aunt in Southern California, she's plagued by the ability to hear the thoughts of those around her, and haunted by the ghost of her little sister. She tries to tune everyone out, shunning her old lifestyle as the pretty, popular cheerleader, but somehow she can't hide from Damen, the new guy at school. Stunningly handsome, clever and not a little bit intimidating, there's something about him that doesn't quite add up. Ever realises he's hiding something, but nothing could prepare her for the truth - especially when the truth involves past lives, murderous enemies, everlasting love and the secret of eternal youth . . . (Synopsis taken from Amazon.co.uk)
Ever Bloom is a withdrawn teenager with secrets.. Ever since her family were killed in a tragic car accident, Ever has been able to see auras - colourful depictions of a person's character -something no-one else can see. She can also hear other people's thoughts through touch, oh yeah, and she speaks to her dead sister on a regular basis. Her once, normal, popular cheerleader-life has been turned upside down by this tragic event and the stranger consequences that followed. Ever goes to live with her aunt in Laguna Beach, miles away from home. She shies away from many people and instead chooses to befriend the quiet, less popular members of the school. Terrified by her ability to hear thoughts, she refuses to touch anyone and is convinced the accident was her fault...
Then she meets him. Damen. The beautiful, stunning, gorgeous boy at school. He intrigues everyone, every girl, every guy.. but it seems he only has eyes for Ever..such familiar eyes.. as Damen and Ever grow closer, that spark, that fire that grows between them..he's mysterious, he disappears, something about him doesn't add up, but Ever can't quite place it. One thing is clear, that Ever's world is about to change in a big way..and Damen's world is nothing like you've seen before...
I began reading this book in 2009 and have subsequently read it about five times now. Two words: it's amazing! Until Twilight, I wasn't much of a paranormal/supernatural romance fan, and have since branched out. But this is something different. Not that it doesn't bear similarities to Twilight, because it does, but it carves a genre out for itself in that it strays away from a vampire or creature based idea..and into the idea of immortality itself without the 'monster' influence. The writing is in first person narrative, which gives it extra poignancy as your experiences are those of the protagonist herself. I found the writing extremely beautiful and intriguing. Well worth a read and definitely one of those `I'll fall asleep before I put you down books'. Ever and Damen's story is captivating and heartbreaking simultaneously. Recommended!
